William Williams, Pantycelyn, 1717-1791

The most prolific - and probably the best-loved – of all Welsh hymn writers was born 300 years ago at Cefn-coed Farm near Llandovery.  Later, he moved to nearby Pantycelyn where he lived for most of his life.

His best-known hymn, ‘Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer’, also known as ‘Bread of Heaven’ is still a favourite with Welsh rugby fans.

William Williams was preparing to enter the medical profession when he was converted by a sermon by Howel Harris, one of the leaders of the Methodist Revival in Wales.

As well as composing nearly 1,000 hymns, he wrote several elegies and poems and nearly ninety books and pamphlets.

Throughout this year, numerous events are being held across Wales and beyond to commemorate the life of this extraordinary man.

Llandovery History Society will be publicising these events and highlighting the legacy of Williams Pantycelyn, Y Pêr Ganiedydd (The Sweet Singer).
Ganed emynydd mwyaf toreithiog Cymru 300 mlynedd yn ôl yn ffermdy Cefn-coed, ger Llanymddyfri. Yn ddiweddarach, symudodd i fferm gyfagos, Pantycelyn, lle bu'n byw am y rhan fwyaf o'i oes.

Mae ei emyn mwyaf adnabyddus, 'Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer' (Arglwydd, arwain trwy’r anialwch), a genir ar y dôn ‘Cwm Rhondda’,  yn dal i fod yn ffefryn gan gefnogwyr rygbi Cymru.

Roedd William Williams â’i fryd ar fod yn feddyg pan gafodd dröedigaeth wrth wrando ar bregeth gan Howel Harris, un o arweinwyr y Diwygiad Methodistaidd yng Nghymru.

Yn ogystal â chyfansoddi bron 1,000 o emynau, ysgrifennodd nifer o farwnadau a cherddi a bron 90 o lyfrau a phamffledi.

Drwy gydol eleni, cynhelir nifer o ddigwyddiadau ledled Cymru a thu hwnt i ddathlu bywyd y dyn rhyfeddol hwn.

Bydd Cymdeithas Hanes Llanymddyfri rhoi cyhoeddusrwydd i'r digwyddiadau hyn ac yn tynnu sylw at etifeddiaeth Williams Pantycelyn, Y Pêr Ganiedydd.
